Tim Wellens wins rainy last stage in Ruta del Sol, overall for Valverde

The last stage of the Ruta del Sol has been won by Tim Wellens of Lotto-Soudal. Alejandro Valverde of Movistar secured the overall victory.

The fifth and final stage led the peloton from Setenil de las Bodegas to Coin with a distance of 151.5 kilometers. Although some climbs were included in the first half of the route, the second half was too flat for any of the general classification contenders to make a difference.

Tim Wellens, Marco Minnaard, Garikoitz Bravo Oiarbide, Maciej Paterski, Victor Campenaerts, Nick Van der Lijke, Simon Clarke and Domen Novak escaped in the opening phase and built an advantage of more than six minutes.

Those in front formed no threat to the top spots of the general classification, due to which the peloton seemed only moderately interested in neutralizing the situation as the escapees continued to maintain a comfortable margin.

The front group was reduced to six men in the finale as the pace was increased ahead of the final sprint, rather than riders looking at each other to take the initiative.

At the finish, Wellens once again confirmed his wet weather skills by crossing the line well ahead of Clarke and Campenaerts.

The peloton arrived a few minutes later with Alejandro Valverde securing his overall victory by maintaining his one-second advantage over Alberto Contador.
