Julien Simon wins last stage, Arthur Vichot wins overall at Tour du Haut Var

Arthur Vichot of FDJ is the overall winner of the Tour du Haut Var after finishing third in the second and final stage on Sunday. Julien Simon took the stage victory.

The 206.8km stage had both its start and its finish in the city of Draguignan. A group of five riders with Raffaello Bonusi, Angel Madrazo, Thibault Ferasse, Franck Bonnamour and Nicolas Baldo formed the lead group of the day and created a gap of up to four minutes.

The five were caught at about 25 kilometers from the finish, on a local circuit in the finishing town. A new group then formed ahead of the peloton and while Vichot had managed to make the cut, race leader Samuel Dumoulin failed to do so.

In the final sprint, Julien Simon handed Cofidis the stage win ahead of Julien El Fares and Vichot. For the latter, the third place was enough to secure the overall victory, repeating his general classification wins of 2013 and 2016. After the GP d'Ouverture la Marseillaise, the win is the French champion's second in the 2017 season.
