Marcel Kittel: I believed in this victory until the end

Marcel Kittel was extra motivated to get the victory at the second stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour after the crash he suffered on the first day.

The Quick-Step Floors rider was involved in a crash during the last kilometer of the opening stage at the Abu Dhabi Tour, which stopped him from fighting in the final sprint. "On stage 1 I lost the chance to fight for the victory, but also some skin, so today I was keen on making the most out of this opportunity," said Kittel at the end of the stage.

The German showed a very strong performance in the day's final sprint, beating Caleb Ewan and Mark Cavendish at the last moment. "Our plan was to leave it late today. It was a strange finale and I surfed from wheel to wheel, saving up some energy. I really believed in this victory until the very end and getting it the way I did makes things very nice, just as in Dubai, two weeks ago."

Kittel took the opportunity to thank his teammates and to look forward to the close future. "Thanks to the guys for their help, they did a marvelous job! It feels great to notch a win also here, before my European debut next week, at Paris-Nice," he commented.
