GUILLAUME VAN KEIRSBULCK
LE SAMYN

Belgian Guillaume Van Keirsbulck has won the 2017 edition of the Grand Prix Le Samyn. The rider of Wanty-Groupe Gobert beat Alex Kirsch in a sprint of two.

A group of five found itself ahead of the pack during the first half of the race but was never given more than three minutes. The peloton reeled in the escapees at 80 kilometers from the line, allowing for new attacks to be attempted.

A new lead group formed in the second half of the race. Van Keirsbulck was there, along with compatriots Maarten Wynants, Kenneth Vanbilsen and Roy Jans and Dutchman Jesper Asselman. This project was equally unsuccessful however as those in front were caught at 50 kilometers from the end.

Van Keirsbulck and Wynants refused to give up however and formed part of the next breakaway, which this time consisted of 12 riders. Others to have made the cut included Iljo Keisse and Tosh Van der Sande.

Kirsch (WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect), who had also made it into the new lead group, attacked when the breakaway had been reduced to seven riders and was followed only by Van Keirsbulck and Van der Sande. The latter was dropped some time later, leaving just two riders to battle for the victory.

Although a chase group kept the pressure on for the two leaders, they kept their concentration and arrived to the finish line in Dour together. Kirsch initiated the sprint but saw Van Keirsbulck surpass him in the final meters.

As a winner, Van Keirsbulck succeeds Dutchman Niki Terpstra who won the Belgian 1.1 race in 2016.
