Fernando Gaviria sprints to win in Tirreno-Adriatico

Fernando Gaviria of Quick-Step Floors has won the sixth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico. The Colombian beat Peter Sagan of Bora-hansgrohe to take the victory.

The penultimate stage began in Ascoli Piceno and finished 168 kilometers later in Civitanova Marche. The course included some hills but none significant to avoid the expected battle between escapees and sprinters.

Ben Gastauer (AG2R La Mondiale), Davide Ballerini (Androni Giocattoli), Rafaello Bonusi (Androni Giocatolli), Simone Andreetta (Bardiani CSF), Mirco Maestri (Bardiani CSF), Alan Marangoni (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Pavel Kochentkov (Katusha-Alpecin) and Joonas Henttala (Novo Nordisk) formed a breakaway and built an advantage of about three minutes.

The gap had gone down to less than 40 seconds with 20 kilometers to go as the peloton was determined to neutralize the situation well on time. Several riders including Peter Sagan, Fabio Felline and Niki Terpstra decided to bridge the gap between the bunch and the lead group but all were eventually caught with two kilometers left until the finish.

A cagey fight for positions followed as the spaces were narrow and offered little space for multiple sprint trains to follow.

Quick-Step were there all along though and perfectly launched Gaviria who went on to cross the line ahead of Sagan and Trek-Segafredo's Jasper Stuyven.

Little changes in the overall classification as Movistar's Nairo Quintana retains the blue leader's jersey ahead of the final time trial on Tuesday.
