Rohan Dennis of BMC Racing Team has won the closing time trial at the Tirreno-Adriatico. Movistar's Nairo Quintana did enough to secure the overall victory.
For a long time it looked like the victory for the day may have gone to LottoNL-Jumbo time trial specialist Jos van Emden. Placed 88th in the overall classification ahead of the final stage, the Dutchman started relatively early and his time of 11'21" was enough for him to remain on the winner's seat until the dying minutes.
Van Emden was finally knocked off his top spot when Dennis crossed the line three minutes faster. The Australian started the day in third place but jumped to second as Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) proved to be no match in this time trial. The Frenchman did secure third place ahead of LottoNL's Primoz Roglic.
Quintana finished well behind the time trial specialists but the Colombian's margin built up in the previous stages was more than enough for him to secure the overall victory and deliver yet another warning ahead of this year's grand tours.
The South America had already won the Italian race in 2015 and as such becomes the seventh rider in history to have won the Tirreno-Adriatico more than once.
