Fernando Gaviria still likely to start in Milano-Sanremo despite training crash

Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria suffered a training crash ahead of Saturday's Milano-Sanremo but is still expected to take part in the Italian monument.

The Quick-Step Floors rider was out training when his handlebar got stuck in a roadside fence, explained team doctor Toon Cruyt to Sporza.

"He was training alone. By coincidence we passed ten or 15 minutes later and found him bleeding from his nose with an injury to his mouth and both wrists. He was also in a shock for a couple of hours and is still recovering now.

"We took him to the hospital to make sure that nothing was broken. After three hospitals we finally got the confirmation that there are no fractures. He should be able to start tomorrow," the doctor added.

"His wrist is still hurting though, so we're looking into an adjustment of his handlebar and grip to see if we can relieve the wrists. The first 100 kilometers will show how comfortable he feels. If he can pull his handlebar, there shouldn't be a problem. The finale is a matter of adrenaline anyway."

Gaviria is considered a major candidate to win the race, which is set to take place on Saturday.
