Movistar Team has won stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya, a team time trial in and around the town of Banyoles. The Spanish formation beat Trek-Segafredo by two seconds.
The time trial was an excellent opportunity for some of the general classification contenders to make a difference ahead of the real climbing stages, while others aimed to simply limit the damage on the hilly 41.3km course.
BMC Racing Team did everything right in this stage and ended up setting a time of 48 minutes and 57 seconds. By doing so they were a comfortable 1'13" faster than Alberto Contador's Trek-Segafredo and 44 seconds faster than Chris Froome's Team sky.
Movistar had the final say however and beat BMC's time by just two seconds to take the stage victory and properly launch Alejandro Valverde for what is to come in the next few days.
Behind Movistar, BMC, Sky and Trek-Segafredo, fifth place went to Orica-Scott ahead of FDJ, LottoNL-Jumbo, Astana Pro Team and Lotto Soudal. Belgian team Quick-Step Floors finished at 2'13" from the winning team which means that its leader Daniel Martin faces a tough challenge to return to the top spots of the overall classification.
Jose Rojas is the new leader in the general classification ahead of teammates Valverde and Andrey Amador.
