Yves Lampaert has taken the victory of Dwars Door Vlaanderen. The Belgian Quick-Step rider finished solo after a successful attack and was followed by his teammate Philippe Gilbert and Astana's Alexey Lutsenko.
Dwars Door Vlaanderen is a 203.4 kilometer race between Roeselaere and Waregem, in West Flanders, Belgium. The race is newly included in the WorldTour and it is the start of the famous 'Flemish Cycling Week'.
Early on the day a group of 21 riders took the lead of the race including Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto NL-Jumbo), Mathew Hayman (Orica-Scott) and Philippe Gilbert (Quick-Step Floors).
As the kilometers passed and the riders faced more climbs and cobbles, that group got smaller until only Gilbert, Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Floors), Luke Durbridge (Orica-Scott) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) remained. The quartet managed to create a gap of more than one minute with the chasing group.
With a little more than five kilometers to go, Lampaert made a move and went solo, managing to get away before the other escapees could react. The Belgian quickly created a gap that surpassed 30 seconds and sentenced the race in his favor.
The Quick-Step rider had enough time to celebrate and enjoy crossing the finish line on his own while behind him the rest of his former fellow escapees sprinted for the second place. Gilbert was the fastest in that sprint and Lutsenko completed the podium of the Belgian race.
