Michael Albasini sprints to win in Vuelta al Pais Vasco

Michael Albasini of Orica-Scott has won the second stage of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. Michael Matthews remains in the overall lead.

The second stage, 173 kilometers from Pamplona to Eltziego, was mostly uneventful. Luis Angel Mate of Cofidis and Fabricio Ferrari of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA were given the go-ahead to try their luck and created an advantage of about five minutes.

The attempt was never likely to succeed however and Mate, who had dropped Ferrari minutes earlier, was eventually gobbled up by the peloton with 16 kilometers to go.

Race leader Michael Matthews delivered a big effort in the final sprint but had to settle for fourth place. The stage victory went to Orica-Scott's Michael Albasini, who finished ahead of Maximiliano Richeze of Quick-Step and Sean De Bie of Lotto Soudal.

Behind Matthews, Lotto-Jumbo's Paul Martens completed the top five.

Matthews does remain in the lead of the overall classification. After two of six stages, the Sunweb rider finds himself in first place ahead of Richeze and De Bie.
