Fractures for Darwin Atapuma and Steve Cummings

Stage four of the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco was eventful with several accidents and left some riders out with injuries.

One of the riders that suffered a crash during the day was Dimension Data's Steve Cummings. The Briton hit the deck with 30 kilometers to go and had to abandon the race immediately.

The rider was taken to a hospital were X-Rays were taken to confirm the injuries. They confirmed fractures of the left collarbone and scapula, as well as the sternum.

"The scapular fracture extends into the joint meaning that Steve will likely need surgery to ensure an accurate reduction," said team doctor Jarrad Van Zuydam. "He will stay in hospital overnight to allow adequate pain management but we hope to transfer him by tomorrow and schedule the surgery in the next two days. If all goes well, we can expect to have him on a trainer in two weeks' time with a gradual return as pain allows."

UAE Team Emirates' Darwin Atapuma crashed in the same place as Cummings and was taken to a hospital with facial contusions, a bruised elbow and head trauma.

Medical checks performed by team doctor De Grandi confirmed a fracture in the left wrist and a concussion, for which he will have to spend the night in observation at the hospital. Next Monday the Colombian will undergo surgery for the fracture.

Other riders that withdrew in the fourth stage include Quentin Jauregui (AG2R-La Mondiale), Daniel Navarro (Cofidis), Rafael Valls and Louis Vervaeke (Lotto Soudal) and Jose Herrada (Movistar).
