Alejandro Valverde: Even I am surprised by this season

Alejandro Valverde says that even he is surprised by the way his season is currently developing, having won several top level races including the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. The Movistar team rider is also prepared to face the Ardennes classics.

"I have been in this race for many years and I was always very close to the victory, but this year I seem to be on a streak and finally winning here is very very special," said the rider. "It has been a different race with not too hard first stages, but like every year the victory was decided in the final ITT. There we had to give it all."

The final stage of the race was an Individual Time Trial that was very close and exciting. "It was a really hard time trial: we were very close to Ion and Alberto the whole time and being the last I had the advantage of knowing the references of the men that started earlier and that was important."

The 2017 season has been spectacular for Valverde with victories in the Vuelta a Murcia, the Vuelta a Andalucia and the Volta a Catalunya. "Even I am surprised by this season. Every year I always say at this point that it has been my best start, but now there are no doubts: this is my best start of a season ever.

"With all the victories that I've gotten I go to the classics very relaxed to see if I win one. Anyway, I don't need to ride anymore for the rest of the year! (laughs)."

The Spaniard also had some thankful words at the end of the race. "I would like to thank the public for its support because it has been fantastic in a spectacular race. I also want to thank the team for always being there supporting me and as always, my family, my kids and everybody that follows cycling and gets happy about this success."
