Knee injury leaves Fabio Aru out of the Giro d'Italia

Fabio Aru will miss the 2017 Giro d'Italia. The rider of Astana has suffered an injury while training in Spain.

The rider had a crash during his training on April 2nd and has since been resting as advised by his doctor. But he has not been able to the progress in his recovery that would allow him to ride his home country's Grand Tour.

"I was already dreaming of the start of the Giro in my Sardinia and I have been preparing for months. I hate it very much that I can't start in the race. But unfortunately I fell and I'm not in conditions to have a good chance at it," Aru said.

"Fabio has had ten days of complete rest and observation. Management has decided that he will not participate in the Giro 2017. The remainder of his calendar will be decided once he is fully recovered," commented Astana team in a press release.

The Italian had set the upcoming 100th edition of the Grand Tour as the highlight of his season not only because it is a special occasion but also because its start is in his home region of Sardinia.
