Sonny Colbrelli wins the Brabantse Pijl

Bahrain-Merida's Sonny Colbrelli has won the Brabantse Pijl. The Italian rider was the fastest in the final sprint in the Belgian city of Overijse.

The race is part of the Flanders Classics and takes place between the cities of Leuven and Overijse, Belgium, over 201 kilometers.

A group of five riders escaped early on and created a gap of more than five minutes with the peloton. Adam Blythe (Aqua Blue Sport), Lorenzo Rota (Bardiani CSF), Zakkari Dempster (Israel Cycling Academy), Jacques Janse Van Rensburg (Dimension Data) and Christophe Masson (WB-Veranclassic Aquality Protect) rode together for a big part of the race.

The first one to be dropped of that group was Dempster and within the 50 kilometer mark the peloton reeled in the rest of the riders. Very soon after that a new group of riders attacked that included Stijn Devolder (Veranda's Willems-Crelan), Laurens De Plus (Quick-Step Floors), Victor Campenaerts (Lotto NL-Jumbo), Tiesj Benoot (Lotto-Soudal) and Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida), as well as some of the first escapees.

In the last kilometers Tosh Van der Sande (Lotto-Soudal) and Petr Vakoc (Quick-Step Floors) attacked from the main group and managed to catch the front group, which was only less than ten seconds away. After the last climb, a reduced group battled in a final sprint and the Italian of Bahrain-Merida showed to have the better legs, crossing the finish line with enough space for a good celebration.

Last year's winner Vakoc finished second and Benoot completed the podium of the race. Colbrelli takes this victory in a season in which he also finished seventh in the E3 Harelbeke and won the second stage of Paris-Nice.
