Sam Bennett victorious in Tour of Slovenia

Sam Bennett of Bora-hansgrohe has won the opening stage of the 2017 Tour of Slovenia. Sonny Colbrelli of Bahrain-Merida and home rider Luka Mezgec of Orica-Scott finished in second and third place.

A group of nine riders spent most of the day ahead of the peloton in the 159.4km long stage from Koper to Kocevje. The group, which included several Slovenians, built an advantage of more than four minutes over the pack.

With 40 kilometers to go, the gap had fallen below two minutes and the escapees were eventually caught with eight kilometers to go.

The final sprint was marred by a heavy crash as several riders hit the right fence shortly before the arrival. Jacques Janse van Rensburg of Dimension Data Davide Orrico of Sangemini-MG.K VIS appeared to be the most seriously affected in the crash.

Moments after, Bora-hansgrohe's Sam Bennett proved to have the best legs in the final sprint and as such takes the lead in the general classification.
