Route du Sud: Pierre Rolland takes stage, Silvan Dillier the red jersey

Pierre Rolland has won the Queen stage of the Route du Sud. The rider of Cannondale-Drapac arrived solo to the finish line after an attack in the last four kilometers.

The third stage of the French race was 167 kilometers long between Saint-Gaudens and Gavarnie and took the riders along a route that included two first-category climbs (Tourmalet and Gavarnie) and one of the second category (Gaborisse).

Rolland was in the front of the race from early on with the company of Gianni Moscon (Sky) and Silvan Dillier (BMC). Behind them was group of favorites that included the red jersey holder Julien Loubet (Armee de Terre), Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac), Geraint Thomas and Sergio Henao (Sky), Richard Carapaz and Daniel Moreno (Movistar).

The last ascent created gaps at the front and at the back, leaving Rolland riding alone after an attack in the last four kilometers. Moscon remained behind and crossed the finish line second, followed by Carapaz, Uran and Dillier.

Dillier got the leader's jersey and is closely followed by Carapaz, who is only one second behind the Frenchman with one stage to go.
