Jose Goncalves leads after stage win in Ster ZLM Toer

Jose Goncalves of Katusha-Alpecin is the new leader in the Ster ZLM Toer after winning the Ardennes stage on Saturday.

After a chaotic opening phase, in which the peloton temporarily split into several parts, a front group of seven was formed with Maxim Belkov (Katusha-Alpecin), Brian van Goethem (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Antoine Warbier (WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect), Wesley Kreder (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Folkert Oostra (Baby-Dump Cyclingteam) and Telenet Fidea Lions riders Daan Soete and Quinten Hermans.

The seven, who became six when Van Goethem dropped from the group, built a maximum advantage of about four minutes.

Several riders then attacked from the peloton and joined those remaining at the front. At 30 kilometers from the finish, Goncalves attacked again and was joined by Laurens De Plus of QuickStep Floors. The two gained an advantage of more than a minute.

In the final sprint, Goncalves proved to be a bit stronger and crossed the line ahead of the Belgian. The victory is enough for the Portuguese rider to take the overall lead as well, at the expense of LottoNL-Jumbo's Primoz Roglic.
