Team Sky cyclist Wout Poels confirmed that he has experienced no further pain from his knee injury and feels fit enough to take part in the Tour de France.

The Dutchman returned to racing in the Route du Sud after spending several months sidelined as result of the injury. Although Poels didn't take part in the battle for the general classification of the French race, he believes that he showed enough to form part of the team's selection for the Tour, which starts in two weeks.

"I believe I will be there," he told De Telegraaf. "The progress has been clear in the last weeks. As helper for Froome I don't have to be in top shape on the first day. I would be used as a fresh laborer in the third week in the Alps.

"I will spend some days in the Pyrenees now to explore some stages. Those are signs of the team's faith in me. And we also discussed the option of taking part in the Vuelta a España this autumn. Because I was out for three months, that may work out well. But first I hope to accompany Chris in the Tour again."

Poels took part in five editions of the Tour de France and grew to become one of Froome's principal domestiques in the last few years.
