Team Sky's reasons for omitting Wout Poels from its Tour de France squad may go beyond his condition. The British team have something in store for him in another Grand Tour.

One of the surprises in Sky's line-up for the Tour de France was the absence of Poels, who has been one of Chris Froome's strongest teammates in the mountains in past editions. But apart from his form not being optimal yet, due to a forced rest to recover from knee problems, the team is considering for him to make an appearance at the upcoming Vuelta a España.

"He just didn't make it," said a spokesperson of the team to the Dutch news channel NOS. "But this decision has been taken also having in mind that Poels is a candidate for the Vuelta this year.

"That is a big goal for Wout, that is if he is fully fit. But we don't rule out that he can be an important man for Froome," they added.

Poels showed his disappointment about missing the cut, but this decision means that he will be able to ride the road race of the Dutch National Championships next Sunday.

The Dutchman last rode the Vuelta in 2014 when he finished in 38th position.
