Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) suffered a crash during the first stage of the Tour de France and fractured his kneecap as a result.

Rain was set to play a big part in the opening stage of the French Grand Tour and one of its biggest victims was the Movistar rider. Valverde suffered a crash while taking a curve that sent him against the fences at high speed, which looked serious right away as he was unable to move from the spot.

The Spanish team has confirmed that the rider has a broken kneecap and is awaiting further tests to evaluate whether there are any more injuries.

After the crash, Valverde was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital in Düsseldorf with pain in the leg and the side. This is the third time the rider retires from the race, the first two being in 2005 and 2006.

Movistar's Nairo Quintana has expressed his concerns about Valverde's withdrawal from the race. "It's really difficult for all of us. He's a very important human being and a great team-mate. I just hope it's nothing really serious. It's awful to see his race ending that way, so early," he commented.
