Ion Izagirre suffers lumbar fracture in Tour de France crash

Ion Izagirre of Team Bahrain-Merida has suffered a lumbar fracture in a crash at the opening time trial of the Tour de France on Saturday.

His team announced this on its official website around midnight.

Izagirre, who was selected to lead the formation at the Tour de France, went down in the same corner as his compatriot Alejandro Valverde and was transferred to a nearby hospital.

"It was a very hard hit into the fence," Team Bahrain-Merida wrote. "Izagirre was then immediately transported to the hospital by an ambulance in company with the team doctor Luca Pollastri.

"The first diagnosis said that Ion Izagirre has an unstable lumbar fracture and he needs a surgical treatment. We will come with further information in the next days," the statement added.

"We are deeply sad that Ion will not continue this year’s Tour de France, where he was meant to be the team leader after the strong performance this season. It is a big loss for Team Bahrain-Merida. All riders and staffs will put heads together, and bite into the further challenges of Tour de France."
