Movistar boss Eusebio Unzue believes that an earlier crash of a motorbike was the cause of Alejandro Valverde's heavy crash in the opening time trial of the Tour de France, as well as several other crashes.

Valverde was forced to abandon the Tour after sliding into the fences in a curve, which results in a fractured kneecap as well as a fractured talus bone in his foot.

"A motorbike of the organization crashed and left liquid on the asphalt," Unzue told Spanish sports paper Marca. "This was the cause of up to eight riders ending up against the fences in the same spot."

Unzue hopes that Valverde will only lose the rest of this season and nothing more. "He will be out for what is left of the season and hopefully no longer. Right now we only worry about whether he can recover completely.

"Shortly after arriving to the hospital, he sent a video to his teammates to calm them down. We are going to miss him."
