Alejandro Valverde underwent surgery on the injuries that he sustained during the first stage of the Tour de France. The intervention took place in Düsseldorf and he will be able to come back to Spain next week.

The Spaniard had surgery at the University Hospital of Düsseldorf. The intervention took three hours in which his most important injury, the broken kneecap, was attended as well as some wounds to his tibia and gluteus.

The surgery started just before midnight and the rider was taken back to his room at around 5 in the morning on Sunday. He will stay in Germany for at least two days and then return to Spain to start his recovery, which is expected to last a few months.

From his bed at the hospital the rider wanted to say thanks for the concerns of family, friends and fans, sending a picture doing the victory sign.
