Tom-Jelte Slagter wins in Tour of Austria

Dutchman Tom-Jelte Slagter has won the second stage in the Tour of Austria. The Cannondale-Drapac rider beat his fellow escapees in the final sprint.

Slagter did not form part of the original lead group of the day however. Marcel Neuhauser of Felbermayr-Simplon Wels, Helmut Trettwet of WSA and Patrick Stosz of CCC Sprandi Polkowice did, but were caught in the finale.

The last part of the stage had the riders climbing the Jasenegg (2nd category) three times. The terrain proved ideal for another attack which involved Slagter, Martijn Tusveld (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Mekseb Debesay (Dimension Data).

In the final sprint, Slagter was the first to reach the line ahead of Debesay and Lopez. Race leader Sep Vanmarcke finished fifth at nine seconds and remains at the top of the overall standings.

The Tour of Austria consists of a prologue and six regular stages. Stage 4 and 5 are expected to be most influential to the General Classification.
