Dan Martin of QuickStep Floors finished stage 5 of the Tour de France in second place and moved into fourth place in the overall standings.

Along with Richie Porte and Romain Bardet, Martin was one of just three riders capable of keeping up with defending champion Chris Froome in the chase of Fabio Aru, who had attacked moments earlier.

The Irishman still had some energy left when the group arrived to the finish and won the sprint for second place, earning him six bonification seconds in the process.

"Tough day out there," Martin said on his team's official website. "I felt the heat on the final climb and at times you had the impression you were glued to the road.

"Fabio was strong, so congrats to him, but despite coming second, I am satisfied. I'm very confident, as I really enjoy racing here and don't feel any pressure whatsoever. The team is on a roll, we are the best squad in the world, which you can see by taking a look over victories and list of results since the start of the season.

"Of course, it's still early and a lot can happen in the Tour, but so far I'm happy of how things went."

Martin, who finished ninth in the 2016 edition, is currently taking part in his fifth Tour de France.
