Ion Izagirre heads back to Spain to continue recovery

Bahrain-Merida's Ion Izagirre has left the hospital in Düsseldorf and is heading to Spain to finish his recovery at home. The rider suffered a lumbar fracture in a crash in the Tour de France.

The Spanish rider suffered the lumbar vertebral fracture during the opening Time Trial of the Tour de France and after undergoing surgery, he feels good enough to go back to his home country.

"I feel OK as you can see on the social media where I posted my video. All has gone well. The surgery was perfect and I'm improving day by day," said the rider. "I only have to say thank you very much to the Hospital of Düsseldorf and all its staff and doctors because they are great professionals and I'm very happy with them."

It is still uncertain how much time he will take for his recovery, but in the hospital he realised that his health is the most important thing and he will take the recovery one day at a time. "I hope that I can recover step by step, and we will see when I'll come back to the roads.

"I'm not stressed about that. We will see day by day. Thank you, everybody, for the support, for all the messages. See you all soon on the roads."
