TOUR DE FRANCE

Frenchman Arnaud Demare of FDJ has finished the eighth stage of the Tour de France in time to remain in the French race.

Demare struggled from the start of the stage, leading those watching the race to think that he had fallen ill. Before the final climb, he was already more than 15 minutes down on the group of favorites.

But the sprinter received help of two of his teammates and together they limited the damage to just over 37 minutes.

My two guardian angels, Mickael Delage and Ignatas Konovalovas, were exceptional," Demare told French broadcaster France 2.

Demare denied that he had fallen ill and instead blames his performance on a bad recovery after the recent sprint stages.

"I have had trouble recovering from these last days. I do not feel sick, I'm just terrible. Today I was very bad. Again thanks to my two guardian angels, the way they rode, it was not work, it was love. Hat off to them. Tomorrow we'll see."

Demare currently sits in second place in the Points standings at 30 points from Green Jersey holder Marcel Kittel.
