Australian Richie Porte has abandoned the 2017 Tour de France after a serious crash on the last descent of stage 9.
The BMC Racing Team leader appeared to overtake one of the other riders in the group of favorites when he went off the road and then slammed back onto the asphalt before being hit by QuickStep Floors' Daniel Martin.
Porte remained stretched out on the road and received treatment on the spot for several minutes before carefully being loaded into an ambulance.
At the moment of the crash, Porte formed part of a group of seven including Chris Froome and some of the other key rivals, but without Nairo Quintana and Alberto Contador who had both been dropped on the previous climb.
Porte began the ninth stage in fifth place in the overall standings, at 39 seconds from race leader Froome.
