BMC Racing Team manager Fabio Baldato was one of the first at the scene following the crash of Richie Porte in the Tour de France.
The Italian stayed with the rider as he was receicing treatment until being loaded into an ambulance and taken to a nearby hospital.
"When we arrived it was about two minutes later as we were a little bit behind in the car," Baldato told reporters. "Looking at him he seemed to suffer from his shoulder but we need to wait for the doctor to confirm it. He was always conscious and knew what happened. He was asking about his helmet and his glasses."
Asked whether the descent was too dangerous, Baldato said that they were well prepared.
"We did this descent four times before the race, in training and a race. We knew it was a dangerous one, but I can't say anything else," he explained.
"We are all sad. We and Richie did a lot of work for this Tour de France, from the beginning of the year. A lot of training, recon, training camps. Also with the teammates that are here we did everything that was possible to put him on the podium.
"For sure we are sad. All we can do is support him and help him come back stronger. He deserves a good result, a great Tour de France. This year he was super good. We expect him back stronger."
