Dylan Groenewegen improved from his third place in Tuesday's stage of the Tour de France to finish second behind Marcel Kittel in the 11th stage on Wednesday.

The Dutchman of LottoNL-Jumbo chose Kittel's wheel and even seemed to reach a higher top speed than the German. Kittel was already to far ahead though at this point and Groenewegen had to settle for second.

"I was in Kittel's wheel, and then you just get beaten on value," the 23-year-old told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

"As a team we were very strong today. We all did our part. Timo (Roosen) dropped me off near Kittel, who began sprinting at 350 meters. The plan was to get past him.

"I decided to start early, but Kittel made the same call. So I stayed in his wheel. He is stronger and doesn't lose pace. Normally if you start that early, you slow down at some point. But I didn't get that feeling from him. I did have a good day today but he is the best right now. You have to hope for him to make a mistake."

The second place is Groenewegen's best result at the Tour de France yet.
