Tour de France leader Fabio Aru: This is the most beautiful thing that could happen to a rider

Fabio Aru is the new leader of the Tour de France after 12 stages. The Italian of Astana finished third on the day and surpassed Sky's Chris Froome to go to the top of the overall standings.

Aru attacked on the final climb, the Peyragudes wall, and initially seemed headed for the win but eventually finished third behind stage winner Romain Bardet and Rigoberto Uran.

The 2015 Vuelta a España winner now leads Froome by the small margin of six seasons and realizes that it won't be easy to maintain the advantage.

"It was a very difficult day," Aru told the TV interviewer at the end of the stage. Sky set a very high pace. It was very difficult. The last wall was hard and a little long.

"Compliments to Romain Bardet who has done a marvellous job," he continued.

"Six seconds is a small advantage and the Tour is still very long. Tomorrow will be a very important day. But to wear the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France is the most beautiful thing that could happen to a rider."
