Chris Froome (Team Sky) finished the day in second position and remains at 6 seconds from race leader Fabio Aru (Astana). But the day gave his team good news ahead of the rest of the race.

Throughout the day, the favourites stuck together. Considering the number of losses of Astana, the team received some help from UAE Team Emirates. "At this point of the course everybody is thinking about the top fives, the podiums, the places in the top 10 even, so it is to be expected," said Froome about this cooperation.

The 13th stage was the first day after seven stages in which the Kenyan-born rider didn't wear the Yellow Jersey. "It is quite a great feeling. I tried to go out there and tried to race for the win today, opposed to racing defensively and having that pressure of defending the jersey," Froome commented.

The rider's teammate Mikel Landa climbed from the seventh to the sixth spot of the General Classification after a successful escape. Amid the speculation, Froome says that this was in fact the intention.

"I'm very happy with the outcome. For us having Mikel Landa moving up like that, that's a perfect position. And I think especially going into some stages coming up, big mountain stages could be a card for us to play.

"Landa put in an amazing ride today, and we wanted him to come back into the GC game. He's only a minute down now which is fantastic for us. It gives us cards to play and especially when Astana has the numbers on decline. It could be a winning move for us in days to come."
