The father of Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana believes that Movistar Team is burning out his son by making him rider for the General Classification in both the Giro and the Tour.

Luis Quintana spoke to Colombian broadcaster Caracol TV shortly after Thursday's stage, in which the two-times Grand Tour winner lost more time and appeared to be out of contention for the classification.

"He got sacrificed too much. It was a matter of bad organization by Movistar," Quintana sr. said. "It seems like they were just learning because this is not the way to ride the Tour. They take the riders there as if they are on a training camp.

"It seems like Eusebio (Unzue) has forgotten how to do it," he continued.

Luis Quintana strongly disagrees with the approach of riding both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in one season. "The Colombians are protesting because Movistar is burning Nairo out. He should not have gone to the Giro if he was also going to ride the Tour."

Quintana finished second in the Giro d'Italia after an intense battle with eventual winner Tom Dumoulin and hasn't been able to find his shape in the fight for the Tour's General Classification. The Colombian did however find better legs in Friday's stage, finishing third after spending most of the day ahead of the peloton.
