Michael Matthews: To come back here and win is a dream come true

Michael Matthews powered to a hard-fought victory in the 14th stage of the Tour de France, two years after injuries kept him out of the battle for victory on the same finish.

Greg Van Avermaet, now second, won the stage to Rodez in 2015 while Michael Matthews couldn't compete for the win as result of a crash he suffered earlier i that Tour de France.

This time around however, everything went according to plan for the Team Sunweb rider.

"I knew it was gonna be hard to have a lot of teammates in the final there because we had to ride quite hard to bring (Thomas) De Gendt back," he said shortly after the stage.

"We rode all day and we were still able to have two or three guys with me there in the final. It was the perfect day.

"The last time we finished on this finish two years ago I had four broken ribs and skin all off my body. It was one of the stages I was really targeting that year before I crashed. Now to come back on the same finish and win it like that is really a dream come true."
