Chris Froome remained in the lead of the General Classification after the 15th stage of the Tour de France, but not without surviving a big scare.

The Team Sky leader suffered a mechanical shortly before the start of the day's principal climb and had to give it his all, with the help of his teammates, to fight his way back to the group of favorites.

"A pretty scary moment," Froome said after being handed yet another Yellow Jersey in the podium ceremony. "Never a dull moment on this year's Tour, that's for sure. Just coming in to the foot of the main climb of the day, AG2R took the race on and at that very moment I had a mechanical issue and had to change my back wheel with my teammate.

"Kwiato (Michal Kwiatkowski) stopped with me. We changed the wheel as fast as we could. The rest of my teammates all sat up and paced me back the best they could on the climb. Then the last little bit over the top Mikel Landa dropped out of the front group just to help me in those last few hundred meters to get back into that front group again," Froome explained.

The three-times Tour de France winner actually thought for a moment that this could cost him the Yellow Jersey.

"It was a pretty scary moment and for a second I thought that this Jersey could definitely change hands again today. I'm just grateful to be in Yellow and again thank you to my teammates for the amazing work they did today."

Froome still had some energy left after the episode and made sure that his principal rivals didn't launch late attacks.

"I wasn't really looking to move myself. It was more about covering the attacks of the other GC guys. Dan Martin slipped away there. Good move by Dan. He took a few seconds in the final there and in this year's Tour it is very close so at this point every second counts."
