Philippe Gilbert abandons Tour de France

Belgian rider Philippe Gilbert of QuickStep Floors has had to abandon the Tour de France due to sickness, he confirmed.

Gilbert was the only non started for Tuesday's Stage 16 of the French race. The rider himself explains that he fell ill and doesn't have the strength to keep going.

"Very sad to leave the best team of the Tour de France, QuickStep team, but i had no choice after being sick," Gilbert wrote on Instagram. "I wish them the green in Paris and Dan (Daniel Martin) on the podium. It would nothing but deserved."

Gilbert, 35, was riding his eighth Tour de France in his first since 2013. In 2011, he won the opening stage and as such got to wear the Yellow Jersey for a day.
