Tour de France - Michael Matthews: The second one is always the hardest to get

Michael Matthews of Team Sunweb has won his second stage at this year's Tour de France and reduced the gap with Marcel Kittel in the fight for the Green Jersey.

Matthews always remained at the front of the race despite climbs and echelons, while QuickStep sprinter Kittel was caught out and ended up losing many minutes. This gave the Australian a perfect opportunity to win back some points for the Green Jersey.

"To get another one in the same Tour de France; normally when I'm in tours I can win one stage but the second one is always the hardest to get. To win a second stage in three days now, I think won't sink in until tomorrow morning," he said about his victory.

"I was trying to go in the breakaway actually but QuickStep was covering me, obviously, because they didn't want me in the break to get the points.

"But then I heard that Kittel was getting dropped so then I really started to put the pressure on. When I heard that he was dropped by one minute over the top of the climb we decided to start pulling. If he's out of the race it gives me a better opportunity to go for the sprint.

"I took the intermediate and we got the final also. So we got 50 points today."

Matthews is now just 29 points behind Kittel in the points standings.
