Marcel Kittel of QuickStep Floors has abandoned the Tour de France as result of a crash in the 17th stage.

The German sprinter hit the ground along with a number of other riders after about 20 kilometers and injured his right shoulder and arm. He did get back on his bike but was forced to give up about two hours later.

Kittel had been leading the classification for the Green Jersey throughout most of this Tour de France and appeared to be the main candidate to secure the jersey in Paris following the disqualification of Peter Sagan.

The 29-year-old won five stages in this Tour de France, taking his total in the French race to 14.

Michael Matthews of Team Sunweb, who trailed Kittel by 29 points following stage 16, is the new leader in the points classification. As such, Sunweb holds both the Green Jersey and the Polka Dot Jersey (Warren Barguil).
