Romain Bardet of AG2R La Mondiale and Warren Barguil of Team Sunweb may have become partners as the former looks to challenge Chris Froome for the Yellow Jersey in the next few days.

The two Frenchmen arrived to the finish with Froome, Rigoberto Uran and Mikel Landa. Bardet tried to gain bonification seconds but missed out by crossing the line in fourth place. Barguil, exhausted, finished behind his compatriot.

"The day did not go as planned," Barguil told l'Equipe. "I fell. Someone took Marcel (Kittel) and myself with him into a ditch. I was a little scared after that and I hoped it wouldn't end today. I still managed to finish with the best."

The leader in the Polka Dot Jersey standings spent most of his energy attacking and setting the pace in the group of favorites, by which he helped Bardet distance the dropped Fabio Aru of Astana.

"I gave everything for him," Barguil affirmed. "The proof is that I didn't manage to take part in the sprint. I told him that I would work for him and I have kept my word."

Bardet himself was happy with the way he performed. "I did the maximum. I animated the race. I rode to try and take the Yellow Jersey," he said.

"I have nothing to regret. I am faithful to my philosophy: to attack, to make things happen."

The Frenchman currently trails Froome by 27 seconds and occupies third place behind Cannondale-Drapac's Rigoberto Uran. The two have the same time in the standings but the prologue results dictate that Uran takes second place.

"Uran did not attack much," Bardet said. "He got the bonification seconds at the finish and that's it."
