La Course by le Tour de France - Annemiek van Vleuten climbs to victory

Annemiek van Vleuten of Orica-Scott has won the first of two events at the renewed La Course by Le Tour de France, reaching the top of the Izoard well ahead of her competitors.

After having been a one-day event in Paris for the last three years, the organisation decided to change the format for its fourth edition. La Course now started with a 67.5km stage from Briancon to the top of the Izoard climb, which later on Thursday will be climbed by the men for the 18th stage of the Tour de France.

Van Vleuten launched her first attack at about five kilometers from the finish and initially saw four other riders able to follow. A second attack by the Dutch rider was too much for her rivals to respond to however.

Van Vleuten arrived to the finish with a comfortable 43-seconds advantage over Boels-Dolmans' Elizabeth Deignan. Elisa Longo Borghini of Wiggle High5 finished at 1'23", ahead of Megan Guarnier and Shara Gillow.

The second part of La Course will take place on Saturday and consists of a chase on the time trial circuit in Marseille. The best 20 riders of the opening event will take part with Van Vleuten starting first, based on her win on the Izoard.

The other 19 riders will start at intervals based on Thursday's time gaps, and the first rider to cross the finish line will win the 2017 edition of the race.
