Tour de France - Romain Bardet: I thought I was going to suffocate myself

Romain Bardet of AG2R La Mondiale recovered his second place in the Tour de France after winning the sprint for third place in the 18th stage.

Bardet launched a couple of attacks on the final climb but finished together with race leader Chris Froome. A second place in Paris therefore appears to be the best possible outcome for the Frenchman.

"I gave everything," Bardet said after the tough Izoard climb. "I thought I was going to suffocate myself after the line. It was really on my mind.

"We rode like a great team. I really gave it all. I knew the climb well. I knew when I was going to make the effort and that it would hurt."

As Bardet moved back into second place by winning the sprint for third place in the stage, his compatriot Warren Barguil had taken his second stage victory some seconds earlier. The future looks bright for France, the AG2R rider thinks.

"It looks good for the coming years. There will be more French riders fighting for the victory," he said.

The 26-year-old had his teammates leading the group of favorites throughout a large part of the final climb. This tactic proved too much for Fabio Aru, who dropped from the group along with several others.

"They put me in orbit," Bardet said. "I made others believe that I was not great and then I made the effort on the descent (at two kilometers from the summit). I tried everything in the final. Nothing is done yet but the Tour is already successful."
