Fabio Aru of Astana says that he has been suffering from bronchitis, which may have been to blame for the Italian's weakened condition in the third week of the Tour de France.

After a strong performance earlier in the French race, Aru struggled to keep up in the last few mountain stages and eventually ended up in fifth place.

"Physical problems are part of the sport and must be accepted," the 2015 Vuelta a España champion told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Nevertheless, the former race leader wants to keep working to secure his current position in the standings.

"Fifth place is not to be thrown away," he affirmed. "There is disappointment in how it went, but the important thing is that we worked well in the last few months. It was not easy to get back to these levels after the injury I had. I gave my best."

This is not Aru's first time struggling with bronchitis, after being forced out of the Tirreno-Adriatico earlier this year.
