Tom Dumoulin to skip Vuelta a España, Wilco Kelderman to lead Sunweb

Giro d'Italia champion Tom Dumoulin will not take part in the Vuelta a España. This was confirmed by Team Sunweb's CEO Iwan Spekenbrink.

Spekenbrink confirmed the decision to Dutch broadcaster NOS and added that Dumoulin will instead focus on the Clasica San Sebastian, the Binck Bank Tour and the Canadian WorldTour races in Montreal and Quebec.

The Dutchman will use these race to prepare for the World Championships in Bergen, Norway, where he is one of the top favorites to take the Gold medal in the time trial.

Wilco Kelderman, who was selected to help Dumoulin in the Giro but abandoned after a crash in one of the early stages, will lead Sunweb at the Vuelta a España. Other riders to form part of Sunweb's formation for the Spanish race include Warren Barguil and Sam Oomen.

Dumoulin's last Vuelta was the 2015 edition, in which he almost brought home the Red Jersey but lost his lead to Fabio Aru in the last mountain stage. He ended up finishing in sixth place.
