Fernando Gaviria undergoes surgery after suffering training injury in Colombia

Quick-Step Floors' Fernando Gaviria has suffered an injury while training in his home country, which changes his schedule for the rest of the season.

The Colombian was due to return to racing at the RideLondon Classic after his outstanding debut in the Giro d'Italia in which he took four stage victories and the Maglia Ciclamino of the points classification. Those plans will now have to be adjusted.

Gaviria was training his high-speed sprinting abilities in the surroundings of Medellín, Colombia. He was just preparing for the final acceleration when his foot unclipped from the pedal, which then hit his calf muscle causing a haematoma.

The 22-year-old had to undergo surgery in Medellin on Wednesday afternoon and will have to rest for some days. He will then resume training and come back to Europe in a couple of weeks. His renewed schedule for the rest of the season will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
