Annemiek van Vleuten wins La Course by Le Tour de France

Annemiek van Vleuten of Orica-Scott has won the fourth edition of La Course by Le Tour de France. The Dutch rider stayed ahead of her chasers in Saturday's event.

After winning the climb of the Izoard on Thursday, Van Vleuten began the chase in Marseille with an advantage of 43 seconds over second-placed Lizzie Deignan of Boels-Dolmans.

Van Vleuten's key rivals Deignan, Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle-High5) and Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) decided to group up. In doing so, Deignan actually gave up 45 seconds hoping that as a trio they would stand more of a chance against the race leader.

But their tactic did not work out and things became even harder for them when Guarnier was dropped on the Notre-Dame de la Garde climb.

Van Vleuten's lead was never threatened by her chasers and the 34-year-old even extended her advantage to finish 1'52" ahead of Deignan. Longo Borghini finished a second later to take third place.

Although the first to win the new set-up of La Course, Van Vleuten is the third Dutch rider in four editions to win the race. Marianne Vos did so in 2014 and Anna van der Breggen sprinted to victory on the Champs Elysees in 2015.
