Maciej Bodnar of Bora-hansgrohe delivered a brilliant performance in Saturday's Tour de France time trial to give his team its second win at the race.

The 32-year-old needed just 28 minutes and 15 seconds to complete the course in Marseille and was one second faster than Michael Kwiatkowski of Sky, one of his principal rivals for the victory.

Race leader Chris Froome momentarily threatened Bodnar's lead but ended up in third place at six seconds from the winning time.

"I can't believe it yet because last year was close, this year was even closer and now I got what I wanted. I'm really happy," Bodnar said after a long wait at the Velodrome stadium of Marseille.

"I have already been here for three hours, waiting. It was amazing, a really nice atmosphere in the stadium."

Bodnar was one of the first of the top favorites to get in action and had to sit and watch as one rival after the other tried to beat his top time.

"I was feeling good today and then I was waiting as they showed all the riders, Kwiatkowski of course... And then I was waiting for (Chris) Froome as he is a very good time trialist. But I got this," he said with a smile.
