Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) finished the 20th stage of the Tour de France in sixth position, only 21 seconds slower than Maciej Bodnar in the time trial.

The rider was satisfied with his performance in the time trial. "It was good, particularly on my terrain, even though I knew the flat parts were going to be difficult," he said to Spanish radio station Onda Cero at the end of the stage.

"I knew I had to benefit from the climb, but it was only one kilometre. The last kilometres felt very long but I'm very happy because the feelings were good despite feeling so bad yesterday. But on other days I felt very good and now I have to recover from all the effort."

Contador said on Friday that he was going to make a big effort at the time trial for upcoming goals. "We will see for what I am making all these efforts, but I can tell you that I am looking forward to new objectives," he commented.

The rider does have clarity on some of the upcoming races. "My participation in La Vuelta a España is still uncertain because the team already had a plan from the start of the season, and we still have races like the Tour of Colorado ahead of us. There is nothing concrete but I can say that I won't start at the European Championships," the rider affirmed.

The Spaniard also wanted to comment on all the love he has been receiving from fans during the Tour and the support of his team. "I can only say 'thank you' to the public, because even though I didn't achieve what I was hoping for and what I worked so hard for, I could feel the love at every stage and it was amazing. For me it is like a tribute and it is a privilege to be part of this. I am immensely thankful.

"I always wanted to finish the race, mainly because the team Trek-Segafredo has put all the efforts in me and were super professional so I had to finish. And at the end we finished it well."
