Tom Dumoulin of Team Sunweb finished fourth in the Clasica San Sebastian. The Dutchman had little energy left for the sprint after having to catch the leaders in the finale.
The Giro d'Italia champion looked strong on the last climb of the day but reached the summit some seconds behind the three leaders at that point. Together with the eventual winner Michal Kwiatkowski, Dumoulin bridged the gap on the descent.
"Today was a really good race for the team, everything went according to plan," said Dumoulin. The team protected me and Warren until the last climb and covered all the attacks beforehand.
"We were in a good position before the climb and from there it was full gas to the top. I didn’t know the descent so well so made a few mistakes which meant that I had to chase even harder to get to the front, but I eventually managed to make it across."
Dumoulin arrived to the finish with Kwiatkowski, Tony Gallopin, Bauke Mollema and Mikel Landa. With several stronger sprinters in the group, Dumoulin's chances of victory were slim.
"In the final I didn’t have the legs so couldn’t go for the sprint. It was a good race for the whole team, tactically we did everything perfectly so we can be satisfied with the day," he concluded.
