RideLondon - Michael Matthews: After the Tour you have good and bad days

Team Sunweb's Michael Matthews has finished in third position in the RideLondon Classic. The Australian is pleased with his form after a difficult Tour de France.

The rider got the Green Jersey of the points classification at the French Grand Tour and that made him one of the favourites for the day. "I had a lot of confidence coming into this race today but unfortunately the legs weren't as good as I would have liked them to be," said Matthews at the end of the stage.

"I thought I did everything right this week to be good here this weekend but I guess after the Tour you have your good days and your bad days."

The rider felt the three weeks of La Grande Boucle in his legs. "I was really suffering right from the start and my goal was to try to attack and make a difference on the climbs but I couldn't even do that. I really had to try to survive to the finish and see what sort of sprint I had left."

The final stretch of RideLondon is downhill and then flat, something that doesn't appeal to the rider. "I wouldn't mind the climbs to be closer to the finish but unfortunately it is the way it is and I guess after a really hard Tour the France I should really be happy with third."

The Australian is ready for what is coming next. "I'm looking forward to do the rest now after this."
