Ty Magner wins opening stage at Tour of Utah

Tyler Magner of Holowesko / Citadel P/B Hincapie Sportswear is the first leader of the Tour of Utah after winning Monday's opening stage.

The first stage of the 2017 edition started and finished in Logan and included two ascents of Logan Canyon. The length of the route was 213 kilometers or 132 miles.

A group of ten riders broke away from the peloton early on and built an advantage of about seven minutes until the peloton slowly but surely began to control the race to reduce the gap.

The gap was down to less than four minutes at 75 miles from the finish and the leaders were eventually caught by the first chase group after a split took place in the peloton.

In the final sprint, Magner powered past his rivals to take the victory ahead of Chris Lawless (Axeon Hagens Berman) and Travis McCabe (UnitedHealthcare). As such, the 26-year-old is also the first leader in the overall standings.

The 2017 Tour of Utah consists of seven stages and finishes in Salt Lake City on August 6. The overall winner will succeed last year's champion Lachlan Morton.
